At least three people were killed
and five others wounded in a shooting Sunday evening at a Glendale, Arizona,
restaurant where a crowd had gathered to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, according to
police and a witness.
Glendale police responded around 7:45 p.m. to reports of gunfire at El Camaron Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse, Officer Moroni Mendez said during a late-night briefing. Officers
arrived to find a chaotic scene with multiple victims.Detectives believe more than one
person may have opened fire, though it was unclear whether the incident
involved an exchange of gunfire or coordinated shooters. No arrests had been
made as of Sunday night, but authorities said there was no ongoing threat to
the public.
Officer Mendez declined to identify
the victims or provide their ages. He said the wounded had suffered injuries
from either gunfire or shrapnel.
Early Monday, Officer Mendez could
not be reached for further comment, and calls to the restaurant went
unanswered.
A witness told 12 News that families, including children, had gathered at the restaurant for the Cinco de Mayo festivities. The witness reported hearing an initial burst of gunfire, a pause, and then a second round of shots.
